I have always had a great passion for Aquarium. I bought my first one when I was only 15 years old and starting from then I've changed many many models. Small, big, bigger, salt water and non. It's my real hobby.
It is so quiet and relaxing to stay there and look at the fish life in a realistic environment. More you can reproduce a real environment and more relax you can obtain from your composition. For this reason at a certain point of my life (as every good make should do) I decided to build something special and had the
incredible idea to build the wall aquarium. I decided to build such similar model for different reasons. The main one is that the space available was not so much to allow a standard aquarium.<\br>
The most complex work to do is to cut wood very well. If you have professional equipments to cut the wood then you have a great advantage. Otherwise you need to adapt some specific cutting technique to obtain perfect results.
For the main tank (at least) you need to minimize distances between surfaces once it will be mounted. To be honest distances should be exactly zero. This is really important for all spaces where you will use resin.
Even if resin cover and close very well, you need to pay much more attention into places where you will have resin and then water. for this reason I used two different resin and specific materials
called matt to cover angles and curves. The first layer of resin is done using polyester resin to cover the matt you need to position at the beginning. After a second or a 3rd hand you can use a specific resin called Gel-Coat that is made to be used
in water (It is used for boats in general).
As stated previously the tank is, probably the most complex piece to build. Do not forget to use matt in every angle and border and to cover it very well with different layer of resin.
Also the glass used for the tank must be well dimensioned. Be careful to the depth of the glass you need to consider that it should be made of crystal and that it should not be possible to bend it.
If this happen, you will surely lose the water contained into the tank and this will cause problems to your aquarium and could be really dangerous.
Once the tank is ready you can move to build the secondary tank (called: "sump") where all technical components will be positioned. If you want to create something special, that could be used
in the main room or in a hobby room, then you need to hide more than possible the secondary tank. The only visible tank must be the main one. The one containing the nature elements.
In the secondary tank you should have the space for filtering elements, for a motor to be used to move water between the two tanks, and a thermometer to raise the temperature of the water. If you want to build something to use
with salt water you need more space in order to install a skimmer but this was out of scope for me, so, in case you need to build something similar, you will need to use more space for the secondary tank.
In the same place where you positioned the secondary tank, you can fix also the central control unit and some power connectors. It will be just a box to connect all cables and switches used to control the aquarium. As you can in the following picture, There is
a main box at the top of the sump with switches able to control power directions for lights (There is a timer in it) and with swicthes to activate or not filter and temperature controller.
Be carefull that the sump should is properly covered otherwise the risk is to have a corrosive effect on cables and power connectors. This statement is especially valid if you are building something to be used with salt water. Salt water has an amazing corrosive power
and can seriously damage your connectors, switches and controllers. So, be sure that the sump is properly covered. This will also minimise the loss of water due to the hot temperature
Now that the sump is ready you need to connect the two tanks. I used simple pipes connected to a whole in the main tank.
Be sure to cover the whole but also to use matt on the border of the whole covered by resin and Gel-Coat.
In order to begin entering fishes, to do maintenance or to enter plants etc, you need to access the primary tank without problems or dangerous movements. For this reason I built two different access (doors) to the main tank.
The first one, from the top and the second from the front. Once opened you have available all the needed volume to access the main tank.
Everything is ready now. Before to enter a fish or some plants (remember that in order to start a new tank there is a specific process. Do not eneter all togheter!!), make some try with water and wait some days.
Clean very well the tank and be careful to fix the box to the wall in the final position.
This last step is absolutely needed because once full of water you will never move it or will never risk to let it to fall down.
